Yoga for Teens

Navigating the Teen Years

Hormonal changes around the onset of puberty can have a profound impact on teenagers. A spike in certain hormones causes changes in the body, mood, emotions and impulses. Exposure to intense and often overwhelming emotions is common, whilst the ability for insight, judgement and control are not fully developed.

In addition to this, is a rise in the use of social media and other online platforms, which can be over-stimulating. Excessive use is said to have the potential to trigger addictive behaviours in vulnerable adolescents. Extensive exposure to screen time can also be isolating, especially when online bullying and trolling happens. Whilst all the above is happening, there is the added pressure of achieving good grades at school for many.

It is fair to say that the teenage years can be a very intense and challenging time.

Yoga – A Map to guide you home

Yoga can offer a useful toolkit in supporting teens through this stage of development. The physical aspect of this practise helps individuals to develop better awareness of the physical changes happening in their bodies. It may also help to maintain a body-positive self- image (there is nothing like an accomplished crow pose to infuse you with self satisfaction!). The adrenal glands, responsible for hormonal production can be regulated with regular yoga practise. It also assists in the elimination of cortisol; the stress hormone. Pranayama, or breathing techniques support the body’s ability to self-regulate or find calm. Meditation and relaxation techniques provide a tool for taming the thoughts and finding some serenity within.

Joga offers a gentle, therapeutic yoga practise for teenagers, to help them navigate inner struggles. We assess individual requirements and develop a bespoke program of posture work, breathing and relaxation to meet their needs. Whilst we cannot solve their problems, we can provide a tool-kit to help teenagers manage some of the adversities they face.
